7TH COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF ANTI-CORRUPTION AGENCIES IN AFRICA, MANGOCHI- MALAWI

The 7th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa was held in Mangochi, Malawi from 29th May 2nd June 2017. The annual event brought together heads and representatives of National Anti-Corruption Agencies from the Commonwealth Africa and was attended by delegates from 15 out of 18 Commonwealth Countries in Africa.

The Conference was hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Malawi and the Republic of Malawi. The theme for the Conference was ''Coordinating National Action Against Corruption in Commonwealth Africa''.

The Conference was officially opened by Hon. Samuel Baston Tembenu, SC Cabinet Minister for Justice, Republic of Malawi on behalf of the Malawian President on 29th May 2017 who in his address indicated that corruption had indeed affected development for the country as it deprived people their hard earned resources.

The conference provided a platform for sharing information on emerging innovations and best practices, experiences and challenges faced in the fight against corruption. The forum was also attended by experts on Anti-Corruption, Governance issues and Business who shared their experiences with the delegates. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission was represented by a three member team led by Director, Ethics and Leadership, Ms. Lucy Kinuthia.

The Commission made a presentation on ''Innovative Initiatives Implemented in the Fight against Corruption''which presentation covered the challenges faced, reflections and lessons learnt and recommendations in implementing the initiatives. The following countries were represented; Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.

The delegates elected Mr. Lucas Kondowe, Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Malawi as the new Chairperson. The delegates issued a communique before the conference was officially closed.
